Summer School Film Criticism

Always wanted to write for de Filmkrant? Then submit to our Summer School Film Criticism which will be completely devoted this year to American filmmaker Steven Spielberg (with reservation).

This summer Amsterdam EYE Film Museum organizes a large retrospective on the work of Steven Spielberg. On this occasion, the Summer School Film Criticism, organised by de Filmkrant in collaboration with EYE for the fourth time  a row now, will focus on Spielberg’s films and his legacy and influence on young contemporary filmmakers. Together the participants will create a special contribution that will appear in the summer issue of de Filmkrant.

Target participants
Young film journalists (between 20-30 years of age) who have some (writing) experience. The summer school will be taught in Dutch, but for people who want to make a video essay it’s also possible to do it in English.

Duration workshop
June 6-7, every day from 2pm to about 9pm at the editorial board of de Filmkrant, including watching films together and time to do research and write. Keep in mind that you need the weekend after the course to complete your article or video essay! Monday, May 30 from 6-70pm is the first meeting at the board of de Filmkrant.

End result
A publication in summer issue of de Filmkrant (or filmkrant.nl). There is also the option to create a video essay. The course will be taught in Dutch, for the video essays and filmkrant.nl there is the option to create an English contribution.

Costs
€190,- for 5 days. Students pay €135,-.

Application procedure
People who are interested have to send a pitch of 500 words for an article or video essay to be made during the course, up to three (published) articles and/or video essays, a relevant CV (max. one page) and a motivation letter (max. 500 words) explaining why you think you are the ideal candidate for this summer school to info@filmkrant.nl before Friday, May 6th, 2016.

Participants must have a proven interest in film history and film criticism. But ultimately they have to provide insight, a passion for film, visual insight and writing skills. There is room for at least 6 and up 12 participants.

De Filmkrant aims to announce the selection on Monday, May 9th. There will already be information on the program in the period prior to the workshop. Finally, participants of earlier film courses are invited to sign up again!
