Friday January 15th Cinéart in collaboration with NALACS and Fiesta Latinoamericana will host the Dutch premiere of the award-winning Chilean documentary El botón de nácar (The Pearl Button, 2015) directed by Patricio Guzmán. The film will be screened at 21.00 hrs in De Balie in Amsterdam, after which there will be space to talk, network and dance in the bar area.
In El botón de nácar, Patricio Guzmán weaves together the stories of colonial conquest with the brutality of the Pinochet regime by exploring the longest border in Chile: its coastline. The ocean contains the history of all humanity. The sea holds the voices of the Earth and those that come from outer space. Water receives impetus from the stars and transmits it to living creatures. Water, the longest border in Chile, also holds the secret of a mysterious button that was discovered in its seabed. Chile, with its 2,670 miles of coastline, the largest archipelago in the world, presents a supernatural landscape. In it are volcanoes, mountains and glaciers. In it are the voices of the Patagonian indigenous people, of the first English sailors and also those of its political prisoners. Some say that water has memory. This film shows that it also has a voice.
After the film all cinemagoers will receive a free empanada from Jazmina Delicious in the bar of De Balie. Tickets for the Dutch première of El botón de nácar can be ordered here on the website of De Balie. Advanced ticketing is advised, because there are only 50 seats available in the theatre.
The night will continue with a Fiesta Latinoamericana (Ambiente Chileno) featuring DJ Eduardo, starting around 22.45hrs and closing around 3.00hrs. The afterparty is free of charge and open for all to join, also for people who have not attended the film screening.
El botón de nácar is an emotional, gripping and at times confrontational film – and at the afterparty there is both space to discuss the film and to dance all impressions and thoughts away. The event is also intended for informal networking among researchers, students and the general public interested in Latin America and the Caribbean.
